The Anchito Foundation for Education and Self-Help (AFES-Ghana), in partnership with Jeunesse Feu Vert (France), has successfully completed a week-long community volunteer project that transformed the learning environment at Odumase-Okanta Presbyterian Basic School in the Eastern Region. The initiative formed part of the 2026 Feu Vert Solidarity Project, bringing together French and Ghanaian volunteers to renovate a three-classroom block while promoting youth volunteerism, cultural exchange, and community development.
The project commenced with an orientation meeting at the AFES-Ghana Project Office, where volunteers from both organizations were introduced to the project’s objectives, implementation plan, and expected outcomes. Participants also received guidance on volunteer responsibilities, safety procedures, and the importance of working collaboratively with the local community throughout the mission.
Throughout the week, volunteers worked tirelessly to renovate the school’s classrooms through painting, flooring improvements, beautification, and the creation of colourful educational murals featuring alphabets and numbers to make the classrooms more engaging for young learners. AFES-Ghana provided continuous monitoring and technical support, ensuring that renovation works met the desired standards while encouraging active participation from both local and international volunteers.
Beyond the physical improvements, the project celebrated the power of partnership and cultural exchange. Volunteers from France and Ghana shared experiences, learned from one another, and strengthened friendships through teamwork and community engagement. A friendly football match between the French and Ghanaian volunteers further reinforced the spirit of solidarity and mutual respect that defined the project
As part of the initiative, the AFES-Ghana and Jeunesse Feu Vert teams also paid a courtesy visit to Ada Kyeremanten D/A Basic School, where discussions were held with school authorities and community leaders on youth volunteerism and future collaboration. During the visit, the team observed the deteriorating condition of the school’s kindergarten block, highlighting another opportunity for future interventions aimed at improving educational infrastructure.
The project also welcomed a delegation from France Volontaire, whose visit reaffirmed the importance of international volunteer partnerships in driving sustainable community development. School authorities at Odumase-Okanta Presbyterian Basic School expressed heartfelt appreciation to AFES-Ghana and Jeunesse Feu Vert for the intervention, noting that the renovated classrooms would provide a safer, more attractive, and conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The week-long initiative concluded with volunteers, teachers, students, and community members celebrating the successful completion of the project together. The partnership not only transformed classrooms but also inspired young people to embrace volunteerism, strengthened institutional relationships, and encouraged greater community participation in local development. Through initiatives like the Feu Vert Solidarity Project, AFES-Ghana continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving educational opportunities, empowering young people through volunteerism, and building lasting partnerships that create meaningful change in communities across Ghana.
